Note: this is why MS purchased VPC: rumour has it that Longhorn (the next version of Windows, due in 2004-2005) is going to be pretty much a total rewrite, a la OS X (but of course this is MS they'll **ck it up) and VPC is to be included as the environment to run legacy applications, much like the Classic environment in OS X.

As much fun as it is to bash Microsoft, rewriting Windows from the ground up would be perhaps the best thing they could do. The big thing hampering Windows has always been legacy code - with XP they have stuff from 2k, compatibilty with NT4, some of the drivers and POSIX stuff left over from 3.51, which was a semi-major upgrade from NT 3.1 which was made to interoperate with Windows for Workgroups 3.11. It's remarkable how many of the commands and controls are similar or identical from WFW 3.11 to XP - even more to 2k since many things were prettified for XP. Of course, Windows ME had all the legacy code going back to DOS 3.2 or thereabouts. A real, complete rewrite that gets rid of legacy code could well clear up much of the bloatedness and security issues. That said, I haven't seen any pork fluttering around above my head, so we'll see ;)

Incidentally, Apple needed the same when they went to OS X, and so far it's worked pretty well. There is/was a lot of legacy code in 9.x that was holding it back.
