I've had little trouble with external Yamaha SCSI (8/4/24S) except when
compiling data CDs whose compressed files take so much time to read that I
run into buffer underruns. A newer Yamaha 20/10/40E - IDE I connected to an
Iodata SCSI bridge (recognized by Toast) minimizes those errors by virtue
of its "burn-proof" circuitry. Both are mounted in external cases that can
be shared by several Macs and a PC. I hear that Lite-On and LG Collins IDE
are pretty good and can be hooked to any PCI-ATA card.
