At a former place of work, one did. My boss believed it was somehow my fault. He argued with me that "modems just don't die." And "modems last virtually forever." This has not been my experience since then, either. Modems occasionally do die, and for no apparent reason, either.... I'm still using a five-year-old Best Data Voice/Fax/Modem, and its features still all work. Just sent a fax yesterday, in fact....
