When I upgraded my 5500/225 (basically the same mobo setup as a 6500),
I asked the same question. Unfortunately, according to all of the
memory places I talked to, the machine wont recognize a bigger chip.

I didn't try to buy one and see for myself, but I have tried to put a
big chip in an LCIII and it sung me a really sad song on startup. Had
to go back to the original that I had. I guess when these things were
limited in the memory department, Apple wasn't kidding around.

My guess is that you (like me) are stuck at 128mb. It would be cool to
have the 5500/6500 (or even a TAM!) able to handle 256 or 512mb,
though. Thanks a lot, Gil Amelio!

Download MacTracker at www.mactracker.ca and it can tell you, among other things, the expansion capabilities of your mac, a history bio on it, how much memory it can hold, it's maximum os, and other things. 1 quick note: It does not take into account third party software such as Os 9 helper (www.os9forever.com) or xpostfacto. Although it may not say that your computer is OS X capable, through xpostfacto it could be. Ditto for Os 9.2 (it will probably only say 9.1) ANything that it says that 9.1 is the max os, thru os 9 helper it really is 9.2 . I've used os 9 helper and it works great.
I should contact the developer and ask him to put that information in......
Another program that can show memory info is NewerTechnology's GURU (Guide to User and Ram Upgrades) But i'm not sure if they make it anymore or if it's up-to-date.
