My 9600 G3 OS9.1 with lots of RAM etc occasionally spontaneously starts indexing (content indexing). Is this normal?

This time it started while i was doing e-mails; initially it said Time remaining 12 hours, which went up to 14, down to 4, 3, 4, then to 14... where 4 hours later it was still at, with the bar indicating still only a third done (same amount as 4 hours ago). Is THIS normal?

The thing has been seriously malfunctioning again... possibly corrupt system, as malfunctions remain when I change to a smaller HD as startup disc (which has a copy of the OS from the same CD). DiskWarrior says it cannot fix it.
