Uh.... I think you mean 8.6, I have 8.1 and haven't been able to use USB. (I know there are 3rd party things out there, but I don't trust them. :-P)
There's no real reason, as far as I can see, not to go to 8.6.
I went from System 7.6.1 to 8.6 in one leap. My ONLY regret is that WunderBar doesn't work under 8.6.
As Apple is giving away the upgrades to OS 8.6 on their website, have someone with a fast connection grab them and burn them to a CD for you.
