The new owner is actually Fetch's original creator/programmer, who developed it while a student at MIT, and it was originally offered by MIT as described.
Two years ago he won $0.5 million on the 'Millionaire' show and used some of that to purchase the rights from MIT.
And then set to work improving it...
That's the story... ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Fetch has been my choice for many years and is still in all of my Macs. At one time Fetch was freeware for single users and education, but was available with a network license for a fee. It is just lately that the company (perhaps the code was purchased by a new owner?) has started calling it shareware and charging.
