Thanks for the suggestion. I went there and read all of the messages for
the 12/640.

They weren't exactly favorably disposed toward this printer maintenance
wise. Apparently parts are hard to come by and relatively expensive. They
also say these are hard printers to work on and suggest not trying to do
much yourself.

One of the messages posted described a problem much like ours. A follow-up
post said that he found something on the drum in the toner cartridge that
was causing the problem. I looked at the drum in the old cartridge, but
didn't see anything. When I tried that one back in the printer, the results
were much, much worse.
