But consider this - you can get a combo FireWire/USB2.0 card for a song these days. If you're gonna spend some money, might as well get the most bang for the buck. Besides, a 5400 does only have 1 slot. FW's great for connecting a DV cam, to pull pictures/movies down, amongst many other things.

However, I need to save my pennies for a while. Next up for the Mac, after the USB card, is a Sonnet G3 card and all the RAM I can stuff into the Mac. Followed up with a larger HD.
Hopefully, by the time I need to concern myself with FireWire, I'll have a G3 of some vintage to install the USB/FireWire card into. And then I'll likely be searching for a serial port card so I can still use my LaserWriter.
