It does not seem to be recognizing the ethernet card. All the sites I've looked at so
far trying to diagnose the problem seem to assume the card is installed, working, and
recognized, and that I merely need to change settings. However, the ethernet card does
not show in any of my options, and when the Mac boots I get an error. It's running a
pre-installed Mac OS 8.something. All I've accomplished so far fiddling around is to
lose the error, but I still have no ethernet connection and no recognition that the
hardware exists.

Being new to Mac and Mac OS, I have no idea what the procedure would be for installing
the hardware and/or testing the card. I've been trying to find a procedure, but so far
it's been what I said above.

I've asked the school IT admin if there's a spare card available, but I've gotten no
reply. I expect she's busy with the new system rollout, and I don't expect her to be
my support anyway.
