What error were you getting?
I forget the exact wording, but it couldn't see the hardware and was defaulting to internel Appletalk, or some such. I'm going to see if I can get the error back.
That's not an error. Simply turn Apple Talk off in the AppleTalk control panel. That happens after it has crashed or been unplugged.
Do you have the Apple Enet and Ethernet extensions enabled?
No idea how to do that.
I suggest you do a complete reinstall of the software. You can buy an OS 8.1 CD for universal install at many places on the internet.
If I recall the 5400 for schools came with built-in ethernet, (but maybe not) and if you simply install the software "for this computer" that will give you the proper extensions, turned on by default.
But I also recall there was a lot of trouble with them and they broke a lot. :-(
