While I can't suggest what will work with your G3, I can suggest a twist
in what you're trying to do.

If your Beige has an ATA CD-ROM in it already (as I think it does), can't
you replace it with one of those "$20 special" internal CDRWs that all
the office supply stores have every week? This is after you verify that
it will work in a Mac and with your burning software, of course.

Then go to LEMlists, or even eBay, and buy an external Apple SCSI CD-ROM,
and hook it to your SCSI port. I bought mine on eBay 2 years ago for less
than $20, cables included. Mine's only a 4x, I don't know how fast Apple
made externals. If you went this route, you could leave the CDROM drive
disconnected and hidden in a closet, etc., and only hooked it up when you
needed it. I don't know about you, but the only time I boot from a CD is
the once in a blue moon when I'm having problems, or when I want to
update the OS.

If 4x is the fastest Apple made its externals, you could buy a 4x
external (or even a 2x) and an internal one at whatever speed you like
and swap them, if you plan on copying from CD to CD.

This route would save you the expense of buying the firewire/USB card,
unless you've got other "toys" you're hooking up to it.

This route would also save a lot of money, probably costing less than the
card you'd need to make an external drive work.

It's something to think about,
