Which is right and why is the 8600 showing up as a 8500?

I wondered this myself. After installing a sonnet G3/500/1meg upgrade, ASP identifies my 8600 as an 8500 also. The only info I was ever able to dig up that might shed some light on it was something in mactracker that said all of the 8500,8600,9500,&9600 machines were based on the same '"tusami" mother board. Obviously with some variations in components (ie; the illusive "speed bummed" kansas models, etc :-), of which mine is). I figured that ASP must need to consult something in the original processor to correctly identify the machine. As to If this is the case or not, who knows? mactracker has been grotesquely incorrect with some info. Possibly someone with more understanding of machineID (gestalt?) could shed some further light on the subject........
or come up with their own theory.....
