Go to http://www.xlr8yourmac.com
under the FAQ's for CD/DVD's you will find the many support files necessary to get 3rd party CDROMS and DVDROMS to work on various macs and mac OS's, as well as where to install the necessary file(s). I had to do this for my sony 48x24x48 on my G3 under 10.2.6., which was fully supported under 9.2.2 & 10.1.5
If the specific device file is not installed for your drive (good chance it's not) then toast / itunes/etc., will never recognize it. Good luck, you may have to do a little searching on the FAQ's to find the correct file for your drive.
