You need to install Apple's USB 1.4.1, I think that is the correct version number. Also: Upgrading to 8.6 might be a free download. If it is, you should go to 8.6, cuz it is regarded as better than 8.5.
Also, if your PCI USB card has more than 2 USB ports, it is important to know that the 2 port cards are the most reliable.
Also, some cards just don't work with Macs, as I personally can attest to.
You'll want the following software from the Apple website:
The latest version of GameSprockets has routines for diverse input devices.
USB Card Support 1.4.1
I REALLY recommend that you get the 8.6 upgrade. As I recall, it's a free download from Apple.
If you're going to be using a mouse or joystick, USB Overdrive cannot be recommended enough. It is the "killer app" for USB input on the Macintosh. You can find it at <http://www.usboverdrive.com>. US$20.00 shareware fee. Well worth every penny!
The suggestion about two port USB cards is a good one. Many USB devices get their power from the port they're plugged into. Too many devices plugged into the card can cause subtle problems. Just get a two port card, and if you need more ports, get a self powered USB hub. They're cheap enough and you'll save yourself some problems.
For reasons FAR TOO perverse and silly to discuss in a family group, I am sorely tempted to get THIS hub! <http://tinyurl.com/nryk>
