Early LC (Low Cost?) Mac drives were SCSI so they would go into your 8500. To be sure count the No. of pins: 50 pin drives are SCSI.

LC (68020) LC II (68030) and LC III (68040) were SCSI as were all-in-one LC550, 570s. My Performa 580 was IDE.
