Subject: 8600/300 CPU questions From: kevin willis <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
I replaced the stock 300 Mhz CPU from my 8600 with a NewerTech G3/300. I was wondering if the 8600/300 CPU would work in a 8500. Also, I was looking at the back of the CPU card and I noticed 4 pairs of solder joints labeled 250 Mhz, 300 Mhz, 350 Mhz, and 400 Mhz. The pair labeled 300 Mhz appears to have a chip soldered between the 2 joints. Would it be possible to remove the chip from the 300 joints and solder it in to the 400 joints? Has any one else experimented with these things like that?
The Apple brand PPC604e cards at clock speeds of 250 MHz or faster only work in the 8600 Enhanced and the 9600 Enhanced (Kansas machines). They will not work in any other Mac or clone. There are 250 MHz PPC604e cards from Umax, Power Computing and accelerator makers (PowerLogix) which will work in all the x500/x600 machines, except the Kansas machines.
I think there's a link to clock chipping that card in the way you describe here: <http://homepage.mac.com/schrier/mhz.html>.
