As others have said, the answer is NO!!!!! Don't even try it!!!!

IMO, you should keep the original 300 Mhz CPU in the 8600 and stick the G3/300 card in 
the 8500. That way you'll have two reasonably fast machines! Of course, you'll have to 
run OS X 10.2 or later in the 8500, not the 8600, but why not? The only real 
disadvantage of the 8500 is the case, so put all the RAM you want into at one time, if 
possible.
