Can someone please tell me what the difference is between a G3 card and a G4 card? If they are both 700 Mhz and 1 MB cache, what kind of difference would there be between the two?

Thanks,

Kevin

First proceed with caution. Since we are on the PCI powermacs list, I'm going to assume you have one of these Macs (73, 75, 76, 85, 86, 95, 9600) or a clone equivalent. AFAIK, there are G3 cards at up to 500 Mhz, and one at 800 Mhz and G4 cards at up to 450 Mhz and one at 700 and one at 800 Mhz. Both the G3 and G4 are supported by OS 8.6, 9.x and OS X. The big difference between the G3 and G4 chips is the G4 has AltiVec acceleration which is used by OS X and select programs to produce speedups in limited areas (Photoshop is one of the big users.) Unless you specifically have a need for a G4, the G3 will do just fine.
