Newbie to Mac OS here...I have a few issues with a Power Mac 5400 running OS 8.6:
1. Reader Rabbit Toddler kids game locks up. This seems to be happening one in every 3 or 4 times we run the application. I can't find the system requirements for this app on the web but I think my 5400/180 with 80mb RAM should be enough. So, is there anything I can do to limit system freezes? Can I prevent some of the things that load on startup? For example, I see some QuickTime and MPEG icons at the bottom of the screen at start-up. Are these Extensions? Can I disable some of these? I'm sort of thinking like in the Windows/DOS world where you have to limit things that load in the system tray.
On the other hand you probably need to UPDATE your Quick Time.
2. Is there an app that I can use that just displays a few big icons for the few games my kids play?
Yes, the Launcher.
Is this what AtEase does?
Don't use At Ease, just bring up the Launcher Palette (Launcher Control Panel) and put aliases on it by dragging the application icon to it from it's safe location on the HD. YOu can set the Launcher to always appear on startup in the General Controls Panel.
Can that be installed on a stand-alone mac, or does it require a central server? Are there any other freeware or shareware apps that can give me a simple menu or icon system that a 3 year old can work with?
Forget AE, it's horrible. Large one-click buttons on the Launcher are what youw ant.
3. Are there any updates that I need to install on this machine?
Fonts, especially with kids games.......see my previous post to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
4. Sometimes the keyboard doesn't work at all. The mouse works fine so it can't be a connection issue, right? how can get the kb > working?
ADB keyboard? You might need a replacement if it's in bad shape. Is it plugged in securely? The only ADB keyboard I ever had conk out was one that got drowned in a flood.
