You don't 'convert' files to PDF. You create a PostScript printer file from AppleWorks, etc, and then 'distill' that file into a PDF.

PDF is a portable PostScript format, which is viewable and printable, even on non-PostScript printers. PostScript is a page description language for printers. To make a PDF, you need to create a PostScript file and then distill it. To do this you will need at least one PostScript printer installed in the Chooser and will need that selected as your default printer. If you properly installed Acrobat 5, you will have at least one--and probably two--called PS Printer (or something like that) and LaserWriter 8. There are a variety of things you'll need to if no PS printer is set up. If you need those steps, please ask.

Here are the basic steps to making a PDF. Once you have those down, read the very large PDF manual that comes with Acrobat 5 and polish your skills to produce better PDFs.

1) Select an appropriate PostScript printer in the Chooser
2) From AppleWorks, or any other application, print your document
3) In the print dialog box, click to select 'file' as the destination
4) Name the file whatever you want your PDF to be called and suffix it with .ps
5) Save the file to the desktop (so you can find it quickly)
6) From the Acrobat folder, start Distiller
7) Drag the whatever.ps file onto the middle of the Distiller window
8) Distiller will make a PDF of the file and leave it on the desktop

Eventually, you'll know the best printers to choose, Distiller settings to use, and so on.

When I attempt to convert Appleworks docs as PDF files using the Acrobat menu features those docs don't show up as available to be converted. When I try to open Appleworks docs as PDF files I get a message saying they are not a compatible format.

Can someone that's familiar with Acrobat tell me what's going on? I've not seen any documentation that says Appleworks docs can't be converted. That is mainly what I want to use it for.
