I'm glad I found this list. You folks are very well informed....and I'm not.
We didn't start out that way either so glad to help.
I want to jazz up my 8600av/300. I currently have 128 mb memory and a 604ev board. The questions are;
Should I max out the memory?
Yes. Always. ;-)
Will a Sonnet G4/700 or 800 be a good upgrade? I use it a lot for the Internet (cable) and for an old cad program and a Canvas for my work.
The answer is - it depends.
For instance - are you doing any 3D CAD work or is it all 2D? Modeling definitely should be fed a CPU upgrade of some kind as well as a video card upgrade.
I really long for the old Netscrape 4.x and system 7 speeds, but I can't work NScape 4 and the system 8.6 is a little bulky, so I'll need more storage, right?
What size hard drive do you have in it now? More storage, depending on the size of the drive, may not be a help to you. Again you probably could see a substantial improvement with more RAM. If you could bump it up to 512M that would be good but I'm sure 256M would show you a significant boost.
I guess what I really would like to know is the general opinion of this list as to revving up this old machine. How would you do it?
Personally? It's all subjective.
If I were going to set up a Mac cad machine I would ask myself the following questions:
1) What would an upgrade of CPU, RAM, Video cost me for my current machine?
2) Would a newer machine be better for the same or near the same money?
3) What exactly do I need to use the system for in the future as well as today?
Thanks in advance

ps. Netscrape 7.1, on a downlod comes up "octet stream" and I don't know how to handle this
( what do you expect from a carpenter?)
Now now...like I said - we all started out knowing very little.
An invalid "octet stream" usually means that the "helper apps" and mime types in Netscape are set wrong for the file you're trying to download. But then again try just saving the file to a directory and executing it anyway - it may be that Netscape is just giving you too much information.
It sounds silly but try downloading something like Mozilla - which is almost exactly the same as Netscape.
Also maybe choose a different file format for download if it's available - maybe a .bin file instead of a .sit or .hqx format.
If you're still having problems I'm sure someone, not me, could walk you through either fixing the mime types or re-loading Netscape from the Apple CDs.
