this is my opinion on the upgrade. memory yes. cpu no.
there gets to be a point when upgrading just is not worth it.
8600's are all around 5 years old now.

i upgraded my 8600/300 with a xlr8 zif carrier card and a g4 350 cpu + added
512 memory

i saw more performance in the memory upgrade then the cpu upgrade, plus it
cost much less.
i spent close to $500 on the upgrade and in hind site would have rather put
that money into a new machine and that is my suggestion. if you dont buy a
new one buy used i see powermac G3/G4 going for cheap on ebay and unless you
have lot of peripherals that only work on that machine and want to continue
to use them.

i saw about a 20% performance boost, i dont know how i came up with that
number, but it sounds good. i did do some testing with photoshop and pro
tools to see how long it took them to load up. the difference was not that
much but i did stop getting the wiggling fingers so much.

the main problem i have noticed it the cpu moves fste then the memory bus.
the 8600 kansas architecture runs at 48-50 mhz this is slower than the first
beige G3's which were 66 mhz. but from my understanding the 8600 is faster
than those beige G3's (dont know why).

i see early G4's on ebay for cheap since the G5 came out.
buy the memory 8600's are great machines and spending $100 on the memory
will only make it run better. i was looking to max my 8600s memory out and
OWC has what we need for $23 a 128mb stick.
