Out of curiosity, are you running it with Toast? I have the same unit (purchased long ago on eBay) that runs fine on OS 9.1 and Toast 4.0.2. I took my burner from its factory external case and replaced my internal CD drive with it. You might try swapping it into your CD player's tray to see if the external cable or box have problems.
It uses the standard 50 pin SCSI 1 or 2 connection to the internal ribbon cable. A standard 4 pin power connector and the standard SCSI ID jumper/termination pins are next to the 50 pin connector.
