>hello everyone > >I just got a "refurb" SCSI Yamaha cd/rw 4x4x16 unit a CRW4416S from >Justdeals.com and it seems to be faulty. I havnt tried to burn anything >as yet as the unit doesnt seem to play back any cd very well, it skips >from track to track and stops in the middle of a track and no amount of >cleaning the cds seem to help I have played the cds in the other cd >player and they are fine.>
>Drive setup recognises the unit but even if there >is a cd in it it wont mount, The only way to get >a cd to play is to boot with Norton Utilities in >it and it will boot off this After I do this It >will play a cd after rebooting There is hope if you can boot off the NU CD. Next step is to clean the CD lens with alcohol impregnated cleaning disk; or take off the top cover and clean the LED with Q-tip moistened with isopropyl alcohol, the guide rails where the head assembly slides to and from the center. Relubricate the railings with Dri-Lube. A blast of contact cleaner where the data cable mates with the unit also helps. Charlie -- PCI-PowerMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
