There is hope if you can boot off the NU CD. Next step is to clean the CD
lens with alcohol impregnated cleaning disk; or take off the top cover and
clean the LED with Q-tip moistened with isopropyl alcohol, the guide rails
where the head assembly slides to and from the center. Relubricate the
railings with Dri-Lube.

A blast of contact cleaner where the data cable mates with the unit also helps.
