can't read floppies

Is the 4400/7200 known for problems reading floppies?

My wife's 7220 had trouble reading floppies. Then it died. The
replacement 7220 refuses to open any floppy; no matter what, it
comes up with "This disk is unreadable by this computer. Would you
like to initialize the disk?".

I tried PC-format discs. i tried Mac-formatted ones set on my 9600.

I tried formatting them on the 7220, which results in
"Initialization failed. The disk is faulty". The floppies are NOT
faulty. They work just fine on my 9600.

Software? Faulty floppy drive? Ideas?

The best majority of the time, if the computer has set for a long time, the problem is caked on dust mixed with the lubricant on the drive bar and dirty heads. Evict the dust bunnies and all their relatives, clean the heads and drive bar with Isopropyl alcohol. Then put white grease back on the drive bar. Then take a blank disk, format it, and keep formatting for at least ten times to exercise the drive..
