Thank you, John, for your response to my inquiry on the LEM list. After further detective work, I found that the reason for the computer's not recognizing the drive was that the drive was not "mounted," whatever that means. Presumably that was because the drive had never been initialized before. I opened Drive Setup, and it showed the new drive on its list of recognized ones as unmounted, and said it could be initialized. So I initialized it with Drive Setup, which also automatically mounted it. The drive now works fine, and shows up properly on System Profiler. I did read up on Hard Disk Speed Tools, and it appears to be a fine program with many advantages. I expect to order it and use it in the future.
