A router is usually needed.

Some cable ISPs will allow multiple IP addresses via the same cable modem and a
cheaper ethernet hub (Sometimes called a switch.) may be used. It connects the
same as a router, but doesn't establish a single IP address. (Nor does it
offer a firewall option.) Ask if theISP allows multiple IPs on the single modem
account.

A router allows the 2 computers to be connected via ethernet cables (the
mentioned oversize telephone type connectors) to ports on the router. The
modem is connected to a port on the router in the same manner. (The different
manufacturers use slightly different connection steps, so get a router that is:
1. Mac compatible and 2. includes instructions.)

My Asante Friendlynet FR 3004LC was very easy to set up following the included
instructions and has never given me any trouble. Belkin and Linksys also make
good units. I decided to buy the Asante only because it was on sale at the
time. Routers start at less than $30.00 U.S. (You might want to check for
voltage compatibilities for use in Australia. I can't remember if you use
110v/50 or 60 cycle or 220v.) If you don't want to run cables around the house,
wireless are available at higher prices.
