Howdy! Well , to your first question, there are a couple other manufacturers out there. Powerlogix, Other World Computing, and Newer Tech. Depending on what applications you plan on running, a G4 will almost always be faster IF the application you're using has been optimized for Altivec ( thats one of the major differences between the two chips). Altivec processes data in 128 bit chunks as opposed to 32 or 64 bits like most chips. OS X is going to be quite slow and almost unusable on these old PCI powermacs. I ran it for about a month on my 7300 G3 with 512 mb Ram. It was ok for web browsing but thats really about it. Reminded me of a pre powerpc mac! If you want any DECENT speed from OS X then you'd want a blue and white G3 or a first gen. G4. A G3 will run about 250-400 and a G4 will run about 400-600.
