Hi.
Ever since I installed a Sonnet Tempo ATA66 and 30GB Maxtor hard drive in my 9600/g4/450 it's had disk corruption. I tried everything to find out what was causing it with no luck. Anyway, I recently replaced the keyboard with another and suddenly no more corruption.
This is a common occurrence, and possibly a coincidence. Another symptom will be that you will run an installer script off a genuine retail Adobe software CD to install a program onto the Maxtor drive and the installer will report a disk error. There is a patch for the software associated with the Sonnet ATA66 card on the internet that will cure it. After the patch is applied the ATA66 card will allow files to be copied to the drives attached to it.
Most likely you do not have actual disk corruption, just a problem with the Sonnet software. The problem and patch are specific to just the ATA66 card. I can't remember right now the particulars because I've has this ATA66 card in my own PCI Mac for a long time, with two Maxtor drives (40 and 80) but i know there was an issue.
On the other hand, if you are still using the ADB circuitry built into the 9600 you may have encountered one of the few haunted ADB keyboards that are still in circulation. Try using a USB keyboard with a high-quality USB/FW PCI card like the OrangeMicro combo card and the problems will disappear. Or not.
