One thing is make sure that your drive is selected in the Startup Disk control panel although I think that's what you are saying you've done (ref: 2nd paragraph). Also, I think I've heard that the Rev A ROM versions are not the way to go, although I don't recall the reason(s)........... You might try PRAM reset and/or CUDA reset as well (after replacing the battery).
