Thanks, again, to all who offered advice both on and off list.

As suggested, I took the harddrive out and booted from a CD. Got a happy
Mac and desktop. Looked good! Maybe the drive is bad. Shutdown, reconnected
the harddrive, and rebooted from the CD. Everything works, and I can see
the drive. Techtool found nothing wrong with the drive. So, we are back in
business, and at least the machine has a new battery.

I can only think that the drive had a bad connection that was fixed in the
process.

BTW, I was ready to swap out the power supply. However, I'm not sure how it
comes out. Do I have to drill out the 4 rivets on the bottom to remove PS?
Please advise.
