I have just installed a IoGear GIC220U USB 2.0 PCI card (9600/200 G3, OS9.1) in the second-lowest slot.
The CD which came with the card in OSX-only, unfortunately. I tried the IoGear site... no preX support whatsoever.
2-port, USB 1.1, name brand cards such as Belkin are the best bet for PCI Macs. There's a Belkin 2-port in my 9600 (lowest slot) and which never gives me any trouble. Works fine with a powered 4-port hub. Generic 2-port cards will also work, but the one I used for a while didn't work with hubs for some reason.
