Hello folks, I have a Performa 6400/180 running OS 9.1 with maxed-out RAM, an L2 cache card and the standard 1.6 gig hard drive. I use it mainly for writing, graphics, web design and web surfing. (I'm also dumping the internal modem for an external one). I could use some advice on upgrades.
I'm thinking of getting a Sonnet G3 cache card, but I've been told they're not worth the effort. Anyone have any experience with them? Do they make a noticable difference? And, are they able to run software and peripherals that call for native G3? And will I be able to run Mac OS X? Also, I need more hard drive space. I'm torn between an internal or external. Is going internal preferred? I see the manual suggests going to an authorized Apple repair shop to put one in the open bay. I have worked on other machines, mostly Mac II form factors, and have replaced the RAM in mine, so I'm not afraid of opening them up. But is installing a new hard drive in the tower a real hassle? Also, I see it can accept a 5.25-inch drive; does that mean that's the only size, or can it handle anyting up to 5.25? Also, is there a site someone can direct me to that will show me what I need to do to install the internal? Lots of questions, but I figured I'd go to the experts. Thanks in advance.
