I'm thinking of getting a Sonnet G3 cache card, but I've been told they're not worth the effort. Anyone have any experience with them? Do they make a noticable difference? And, are they able to run software and peripherals that call for native G3? And will I be able to run Mac OS X?

I've a 400Mhz G3 Sonnet Crescendo card in the L2 cache slot on my 5500/225.

It IS worth the money! This is a MUCH faster and peppier machine with the Sonnet card than without. Processor intensive jobs like MP3 encoding and manipulating large graphic files are appreciably faster. I can't speak to your question about "native" G3 applications, as I don't believe I have any installed. All my serial and SCSI peripherals work just fine.

The card has made such a difference, that I'm no longer in the market for a G3 desktop or minitower machine and I passed up on purchasing a working Tangerine iMac in very good condition for $150 or so. And I REALLY like the look of the Tangerine iMac, too.

I don't think that OS X is supported/installable on a Mac with a G3 upgrade like the Sonnet. But who knows what tomorrow might bring when it comes to hacking OS X into older machines.

In my opinion, if you don't need OS X for some absolutely necessary purpose, stick with OS 8 or OS 9.
