I forget the particulars, but I think it had something to do with the the apple USB printer sharing extension under OS 9.x conflicting with the HP USB driver. I recall the doc went as far to say that the printer could not be used for printer sharing on a MAC. (they are wrong) I also thought that a subsequent driver update was supposed to have addressed this issue. Maybe that will help? I was using an 8600 at the time also. HP is probably going to give you the standard "we only support MAC computers with built in USB" line of balderdash.
