Certainly, the mobo's cache comes up enabled on all machines which have 
soldered cache, and probably those which have plug-in cache.

It is an option of those INITs (through their control panels) to select mobo 
cache or backside cache, or both. I don't think "neither" is an option. 
Certainly, the NewerTech cards appear to fail, should there be no L2 or L3 cache 
(and should the true L2 cache be defective, then a functional cache which is 
otherwise a true L3 cache can become the de-facto L2 cache).

(The CPU's L1 cache has to work, otherside the CPU won't).
