I had a similar bad experience with YellowDog 2.1 quite some time back.  I
eventually got YD to come up, but it never worked quite right (from bizarre
screen colors that I couldn't change, to strange pauses, etc.).

I was able to get Mandrake up and running without a hitch;  I've always used
Red Hat on my <gasp> x86 boxes, but was warned against it from somebody
(don't recall who).
