Have a 1710 on a 7300 on a twin turbo card and it works fine, must be
reasonably unused because it is very sharp with heaps of contrast to go. And
supports some fine resolutions. I was given it and was pleasantly surprised
because all prior ones lacked sharpness (they were probably just much used).

I once did have problems similar to Steve, when somehow I chose an
apparantly unsupported resolution when I was setting up. All went blank.
Even after restart. Very frustrating. I had two monitors on my 7300 machine
and tried to bring up the monitor control panel to investigate. But, of
course, for starters, I had set the menu to be on the 1710 which was dark.
No matter, I had, fortunately, once made a key commanded script to bring up
the monitor control panels. So I did. But, with 2 screens, there are 2
panels and the relevant one was on the dark 1710 (in particular, the
important "Arrange" button was on the 1710, never mind the relevant screen
resolutions).

What was needed was to get this panel over to the good screen. Well, though
the 1710 screen was blank, it was not stupidly so. (Ever heard of a
phenomena called Blindsight? It is a peculiar brain condition, a deficit,
whereby folk report seeing nothing from at least one eye but yet can
accurately answer questions about phenomena only "visible" to that eye. In
other words, lightwaves are penetrating and the brain is getting info, but
the conscious look is missing. The analogy is to do with that there are -
sort of - things on the screen but which can't be seen. Ever turned on the
monitor late and found the desktop already waiting for you? This is an image
that is there when the monitor is off, even creepier. I tell you, this Mac
business can get spooky).

So I spent time fishing for the monitor control panel from the darkened
screen to try to drag it to the working one (on the vram). It is very hard
to get the mouse onto the top bar of an open window you can't see.

An applescript with a key command to bring any front window over to the
working screen (it is easier to activate a whole window on a totally dark
screen than to grab the thin top bar that allows you to drag it) did not
work, a control panel window is a different beast...

I did manage to bring over the preferences window (I had aliases and things
on the visible screen that gave a handle. And the keycommanded window move
script ...) And deleted the monitor prefs.

I then found and loaded the monitor software (there is an official floppy
disk) and loaded the software (with help from list folks) of the twin turbo
card. And it has been apples ever since.

I understand the 9600 has no inbuilt vram video and needs a PCI card.
Perhaps your card needs software or is on the blink? Perhaps you could buy
another card that will stand you in good stead (and if the old one is good,
use it for a second monitor - a wonderful arrangement). If you could get a
known good monitor on it to see what resolution switching you can do... I
had the advantage of another screen to operate the machine, which you might
not have?

I am happy to try to find the 1710 floppy with software on it and maybe
email it to you, maybe it would help? And there might be software you need
for your card?

Don't know now if I have been at all helpful.
