Did you try using the install CD to boot since it 
usually comes up at a
fix monitor resolution?
If it works, Then you could go into the monitors 
control panel on the
hard drive.
I had this problem once also.  I just switched 
the monitor over to the
rage card and reset the resolution.
It was my monitor that I use for testing used 
machines. Also did you
try zapping the pram or pressing the cuda? since 
this resets a lot of
preferences also.
