Because I suspect that OS X *does* use it, but in the background, under the gui.
For example. Carbon Copy Cloner is a gui wrapper (Applescript Studio, I believe) around the command-line 'ditto' command.
I suspect that's why the 'BSD Subsystem' has been a grayed-out, un-uncheckable option in OSX installs since 10.1.
Also, for *any* unix hacking at all in the box you need it, and that is, imo, one of the absolutely best things about OSX: I get all the advantages of BOTH the Mac and Unix.
(FOEX: the Dean's secretary here at work got a stupid winmail.dat file with a needed Excel file in it. I was able to google a reference to a Unix program tnef that decodes these files, find the source code, compile the program and decode her file in about ten minutes.
That ROCKS.
I couldn't have done that on an old Mac. Now I can probably whip up a quick Applescript studio program to make a gui wrapper around the program, and do it in true drag and drop Mac style.
Best of both worlds.)
