Dirty in this case means a filesystem which was not unmounted properly, either through power failure or crash. I haven't had a bad system crash under OS X yet, but I have under other UNIX-like OSes and the number of damaged inodes can be quite high, depending on how busy the machine was at the time of power loss or crash.

True I suppose, but then again when running UNIX it\s never suddenly lost half my files at the same time. I have however had that happen to me at one time or another as a result of Norton Utilities crapping up, or when the hard disk when schitzo. Just giving an alternative based on my experience.
