I tried to use the Desktop Printer Utility to create another desktop
printer, but it wouldn't allow it, because the other one was still there.
But you can't see it.

Try restarting with extensions off. Then the desktop printer will revert to the folder icon it actually is (and may become visible) You can then delete it and recreate the printer. We had one system that used to do this all the time, only when it messed up the desktop printer it would freeze up as soon as it tried to print.
