the uplink port, funnily enough is crossed over 
internally... that's why it's called  the uplink 
port. so you can use just pieces of normal cat5 
and no crossover cables whatsoever. but if you're 
connecting a computer to a hub, why do you need a 
crossover cable in the first place?

but a crossover cable is  what you need for 
pc-pc. not pc-hub-pc.

Are you connecting to the hub in the uplink port? 
 If so, then it would work
with a cross over cable, but not in the standard 
ports.
