Dan, how much RAM ?
If you're the type that runs one app at a time, you can probably get away with 128 MB. My pref is 200 to 512 MB for OS 8/9, and a min of 512 MB for OS X. If you do large image or video editing - fill 'er up.
How ' Ancient ' can the extensions be ?
Check *every* non-Apple extension (control panel and extensions) you have for updates. Many many things changed in the OS between 8.6 and 9.1. And some more in 9.2.2. If it hasn't been updated since the OS 8 days, set it aside for now. (ie, eliminate questionable things now, to make the transition easier).
