That is correct. Windows Media Player 7.0 also dropped Save and save as
options in both Mac and Win versions. That was to encourage streaming and
discourage downloading proprietary material. (The official MS work around for PC v. 7
was to make 6.4 the default viewer!!!) WMP went proprietary and only plays
MS flavored video except for MPEG4 v.1 The published codecs for 6.3 and 7 are
below. QT is (or was) much more robust in terms of playing AVIs than the
latest WMP. However WMP files ONLY play on WMP. Do a web search for WMP 6 for
Mac in case MS hasn't pulled it completely off the web.

(Also Quicktime ran on WMP 6, but was dropped from 7. Here's what the
official MS explanation for why .mov files would pull up WMP 6 instead of WMP7 (on a
PC but it should also apply to Macs).
"This behavior occurs because Windows Media Player 7 does not support files
that are created with QuickTime version 2.0 and later. File formats from
QuickTime version 2.0 and earlier are supported in Windows Media Player 7 only if
you have upgraded from a previous version of Windows Media Player. If you have
not previously installed Windows Media Player, Windows Media Player 7 does not
support the playback of QuickTime files." --- ie WMP 6 DID support QT.
