I completely agree with a lot of that. Especially with the 5500 series, being as it's such a "wide" machine in terms of what it will take - One of the more easy going Macs.
Only problem is I'd just get too annoyed with it - The presence of SCSI in a modern IDE World is (to me) annoying - I can't upgrade the CD-Rom drive without shelling a substantial amount, when I could simply go down to my local PC reseller and buy a 52x24x52 ATAPI for less than 15 (US $25-$30). Another annoyance with the 5500 series is the Screen - Most examples have screen issues and the 5500 Motherboard can only display 1024x768 in Thousands of colors (For which you need binoculars) - At the time, sure it was great but I'm used to a 17" Widescreen G4 iMac (which will be highly criticized in years to come, I'm sure). In truth no one can keep up with the way technology changes. The 5500 was once a Top-spec machine, as was my iMac when I bought it a Year ago, but my 5500 is still a highly valued machine to me. I don't think I could use it as a primary machine though unless I was really strapped for Cash.
