9.1 runs quite happily on my 5500, even though it's only got stock 32mb RAM, but i prefer 8.6.
the best things i'd like for my mac are 2 64mb edo dimms and a g3 or g4 upgrade card. :) (and at present a new TV/FM Radio card as the TV coax aerial connector has snapped off and isn't really worth resoldering as the bit that goes from the coax to the actual bored is pretty much a lost cause. And giving that it's a black 5500 (something I didnt know before) I'd prefer to keep that if it were me! The G3 AIO is a good model in that is has those 3 PCI's as opposed to the 5500's Single PCI and COMM-II capabilities. On some models it came with a ZIP drive as well which was an added bonus, however, it came in the normal beige ugly case and had no TV capabilities (3rd Party?) unlike the 5xxx series. One MAJOR advantage of the G3 AIO is the RAM ceiling is 768MB. It really depends what you're going to use it for... The PowerMac 5500 is a perfectly good Machine and I believe from the OS 9 series it isn't worth shelling out the money to upgrade it to G3 - It's performs perfectly well with 128MB RAM - if speed is was the issue perhaps you ought to upgrade to something a lot newer, like the later iMac G3's, which can be picked up for 250+. G3 AIO's are OK but you'll have a job to find a decent example on eBay UK, and for not much less than the iMacs they're not really as good value.
