First off, I can vouch that the firmware for a 2940UW (not the U2W) will go back and forth between a Mac and a PC. I've done it in the last week as I was having SCSI problems, and it worked flawlessly. Its now back in a PC after reflashing. Pretty kewl IMO. > First will these cards work OK in these machines? I have some memory that works fine in these machines, but when I put a 2940UW in, the memory prevents the 2940UW from working in anything other than 50 pin mode. I have no idea why; It could be my memory, it could be my card, it could be the phase of the moon for all I know. Its working great now, but not with the memory I had just purchased. > Second, when I can afford to upgrade my PCI Macs to a B&W or > a native G4 Mac > and newer version of OS X will I still be able to transplant > these cards into > the new machine(s)? Should. Somebody more knowledgeable about this will have to respond. Theoretically, it should. > Further, with that future B&W or G4 would the 2940 offer a greater > performance gain given the proper hard drives and cables; > assuming the card is > compatible. It depends on what you do with you Mac. If you are doing video or picture editing, a pair of SCSI drives can do wanders for the perceived speed of the system. If its just web browsing, game playing, document writing, email, etc., it probably won't make much difference. Today's IDE drives are pretty fast (in addition to be very cheap!).
