Chances are it is made for HP by one of many makers like Matsushita, Yamaha, Sony, LG, Lite-On. Use a later version of Toast or downloading an upgrade that will recognize the burner. Burners have built-in memory buffers to hold data in cache until it is burned to CD and striking a balance between burn speed and its buffers will help for the completion of the task. Additional memory (from the Mac) can be allocated to help built-in buffers from running out of data and spell the difference between a fully burnt CD or a coaster.
